Spring10 Reading 7 – form
Our last reading for the semester is a review of the formal concepts covered this semester. It is from Ocvirk, Stinson, Wigg, Bone & Cayton, Art Fundamentals: Theory & Practice. pp 31-71. Comments must be posted before the final class (5/13). No credit given after that.

Once again I found this reading very interesting. The evolution of form goes down to the elements of art connects to the princples of organization which then creates space to produce unity seems complex when you think about it but reading this made me realize that this process goes through an artist head with no complexity at all. To them this is how they would always create, we learn from them these concepts through their work because their work has all these elements naturally. I really enjoyed the watercolor and acrylic painting by Nacy Graves, Perfect Syntax of Stone and Air, among all the different distractions in the painting you can still point out a solid image yet my eyes float all around the painting following her brush strokes. Its a pretty intense overwhelming painting.
A stunning read, indeed. Elements really do so much in one’s artwork, and when an artists incorporates them, it is amazing what they can really do when the work is complete. Of course, everyone has their own tastes, yet even the slightest understanding is natural within one’s self.
I love the painting. Overwhelming, but very dynamic, and very powerful. I also love the complexity of it.
Pretty intensive reading. I found that a lot more psychology goes into painting than I originally tohught, Especially in abstract painting. The principles of design can be used to play tricks on the eyes. For example overlapping can be used to make an object look like something in the background. I notticed this especially in “Night and Day” by M.C. Escher. In the middle the ducks look like the field in the background almost blurred. And as the ducks move away from the center they become more distinct. It also creates the illusion of movement. It sure gave my eyes a workout.
This reading was very helpful for the museum paper. It tied together all the concepts that we learned about this semester. The best unofficial concept in this reading is interpretation. It states that all the concepts are subject to interpretation which allows for a wider range of artists to understand and apply the concepts to their art.
The reading felt like a summary review of what we went over through the semester. I feel intrigued by Sam Haskin’s Apple Face. The extensions of shapes of the objects help create the feeling of harmony. I like how, despite the differences in nature of the bee and the apple and the face, the coloring helps to mend the bridge between the objects. I wish I did this reading and found out more about how different objects are linked together to create harmony. It would have helped me explain how Sandow Birk’s Purgitorio volcano worked so well with the island around it to create a harmonic, yet contrasting image. There is additional info on balance and other concepts we covered it’s good to see more example of them to help solidify my understanding of these elements and principles of art.
It was pretty eye opening after reading this because I always knew that a lot of work went into painting but I never realized how much work emotionally actually went into it at certain times. After working on a painting for a long time its amazing what a piece of work can do to you. Theres something about this piece that really made me Love it, even though I didn’t like it at first I keep going back to look. So much has gone into the piece that really gives its character and style.
I think that this reading kind of explains everything we learned this semester. I like how it took all the concepts we learned and put them together. It’s really interesting how each painting can have so many different concepts put together. I don’t think I’ll ever look at a painting without thinking about all the different concepts used. I used to think that painting was easy; all you needed was paint, a brush, and canvas. Now, I realize that there is a lot more to painting then I first thought and now I realize all the work painters have to go through to make a good painting. I feel like I will be able to appreciate paintings more now that I learned how much work is put into them.
I agree with kathy and Eric that this reading includes everything we learned from this semester. All the elements and principles help us to realize what art really have. I think that it would be so interesting if I can put everything into one piece of art because it is still impossible for me. However, it could be more interesting if there is only one element or one principle to apply in the art work. I really like the art ” Day and night ” by M.C Escher because of the connections of the ducks. It looks like 2 pictures are blending together. Totally love it.
The part I found most interesting about this reading was the human aspect as a viewer. In the beginning the reading talked about how as human being we tend to try and make order out of chaos. Later when talking about harmony and repetition they said something similar. As viewers we tend to complete what is not there in a pattern. They called this closure. I remember talking about this in some of my other courses and I feel it goes along with implied line. The viewer makes a lot up when seeing a painting or artwork and the creator thinks about these things and how it will be viewed while creating it. All of these things culminate to create a successful piece of art.
I really got a better understanding of this last reading because it pretty much summed up everything we have been learning about in the class. It restated all the principles and all the elements that are used to make a piece of art work really work. After being a part of this class and learning all the elements and principles I now have noticed that I myself end up really breaking apart artwork. just last weekend I revisited the asian art museum to look at the Eggwoman II and without thinking about it i took it apart and looked at what made the piece so successful. I began to pay close attention to the repetition of the images and balance that was used. I focused on the movement both which is created by the way it was painted and also with the way the different shapes were placed.
It was a great summery of what we were learning in the class. It helped me reinforced the concepts into my mind. It was interesting to read about how art can have such a impact on the viewer and it makes me want to work harder to also invoke that feeling.
It feels a little sad to reread the first chapter of the semester. It made me feel somewhat wiser to remember the elements again so I can continue using them in my future pieces. I can’t forget these art elements or else my technique would fall little by little.
Pretty epic reading. It’s nice to have a reading like this at the end. It was a good retrospective for what we learned in class and revisiting these old topics did not seem as foreign to me as from the first time I have read about them. With this being the first art production type class I have ever taken I have probably learned more about art from this class than from the art history classes I have taken before.
I like this reading because it allowed me to reflect on what I have learned this semester. I actually knew what was talked about in the reading instead of simply skipping over the words I didn’t know. Art means so much more to me now than simply a visual because I know that so much more goes into it like principles and elements.
