Reading1
I have really focused more on everything behind the subject when Zizek pointed them out. Seeing how there is not a lot going on in the negative space it’s actually very interesting to me, but I didn’t really notice it myself until it was actually pointed out. I never would have thought you could use a negative space to get a specific point across. Listening to Zizek was very challenging.
Reading2
I’ve learned a lot about harmony and Variety which I never really knew about anyways. These readings also helped me to better understand composition and how paintings start to form. I like the lines that created the strength from Julie Mehretu’s work. The lines defiantly add a mood to her work which makes every art piece it’s own. These lines in her work make it so it cant be made into something else.
Reading3
I love the repetition of Wayne Thiebaud paintings it adds a little bit more to his work and sets it apart from others. He admits that some parts of his work come as a mistake such as the tongue from the dog painting but adds more. This shows that mistakes can be for the best and should be accepted at times and not everything should be taken so seriously. His work is amazing especially the way he combines all the different colors to trick your eye to create shadows as an example. The reading made me think about rhythm and I saw rhythm all over Wayne’s work.
Reading4
The reading helped open my eyes for making art that catches someone’s attention such as myself. It helped me to realize that the composition of a piece is very important which I always knew but not always used. Creating a point of a piece can be done different ways such as creating isolation in an art piece, and placement of objects which is very important.
Reading (Cubism, Picasso and Hockney)
I never really used to think that cubism was the way to go especially because I never really understood it or saw many art pieces. Looking of Picasso’s work and doing the project I can now see and have a better understand of what the artist saw and felt. It is truly a refreshing way of looking at objects, people, etc. I can also see how wanting to show more than one object changes everything is a great way.
Spring10 Reading 4
From the reading I learned that the placement of the important part is important. Keeping things in the center is not very good because it could be too much emphasis. This made me really think about my previous artwork from this class and other classes of how it would have been better to move the main things around to change the image so it would be stronger. This would give my work a stronger meaning.
Cubism, Picasso and Hockney
If I understand the way cubism works then the way to best create a piece is to create emphasis through the contrast of light in the image and also the use of placing images together that are interesting by this I mean images that are not a solid color or images that connect directly together. In the end the image would look better if the smaller parts of it are in a way abstract.
Spring10 Reading3
I am really interested in our rhythm piece. I haven’t played any instruments but I think it would be interesting to put the music in a form of art. If something is fast paced and has a lot of ups and downs the drawing of it would be chaotic unlike something that is smooth and peaceful
Spring10 Reading 6 – balance
I knew artwork is balanced but I never thought that texture could be used to balance things out. With texture artwork is a lot more interesting and complex especially if you think about what the texture used is from and also it has a special significance to the meaning of the work. I never thought that symmetry was boring. I like symmetry if the design is complicated and with it could even look 3d. But I have to admit simple designs can be boring unless they are off center or somehow thrown out of place.
Spring10 Reading2
This reading to me was interesting. I was able to get a better understanding of what unity and what harmony was and the difference between the two. It also helped me understand the way to make sure I don’t create chaos.
I was just wondering how this works for people of different ages. For instance younger kids tend to draw scribbles that seem to make no sense random crayons they pick up colors they don’t know just spread out on the paper. Later once they know different colors and things they like. There seems to be more structure to them, as they tend to draw them in such as the yellow sun in the upper right or left corner, a block shape house with a triangle roof in the middle of the paper. Kids loose the cause and get more unity in their work.
Spring10 Reading 4
This reading helps me to improve on emphasizing objects. Using isolation to emphases objects is very interesting because i always thought that it will make the picture off balance. After looking at the example for isolation, i realized that there is a way to make it balance and also good at emphasis. Emphasizing by contrast is interested me because I haven’t use that technic to put on my art work before.
Reading 4 Emphasis
The reading really helped me think more about emphasis in my artwork. The artwork in the reading included many different examples of emphasis through isolation, contrast and color. The De La Tour painting shows emphasis on the girl’s face through color and contrast. I never really thought about emphasis through placement but after seeing the examples in the reading I understand it more. I plan to work on incorporating this technique into my future artwork. The emphasis in a painting can be more important than the painting as a whole. It is like a thesis in an essay.
Reading 5 Chosen Artist
Chosen Artist: Edward Hopper
Catalog Title: Edward Hopper: The art and the artist
Chosen Painting: Chop Suey
Date of Chosen Painting: 1929
Reason: I chose the painting “Chop Suey” by Edward Hopper mainly because of the colors used. I’m really into pop art type painting and I feel like Hopper has a mix of that in his art work with colors that really pop up such as yellows and reds.
Reading 2 unity harmony Julie Mehrehtu
It is unfortunate that I did not read this article when we were first exploring unity and harmony within our assignments. It was very helpful in explaining exactly what unity and harmony do within a piece. What I found most interesting is the fact that they both do not necessarily focus on the subject, but rather what the subject is forming. Julie Mehrehtu had a great way of putting this concept into perspective by her methods. It was cool to know that she starts off with a background of abstract objects and then incorporates layers upon layers of lines in order to harmonize her work.
Reading 6 balance
Balance is really one of the factors that can make or break a piece. By utilizing texture, color, value and symmetry it is possible to catch the viewers attention to important parts without distracting them. If a piece in unbalanced it can prove to be problematic because the viewer can become uneasy and lose track of what the artist is trying to convey.
Reading 1, Introduction
I enjoyed the clip because it sorta opened my eyes to how films are seen. I have seen the movie Children of Men before and one of the reasons I liked it was how immersible the film’s atmosphere was and how from the use of positive areas and especially the negatives areas in the film create the feeling of immersion.
Reading 2, Line, Unity
The reading was interesting, all the elements described were things I was aware of, but couldn’t define how and why they had an effect such as the use of repetition and proximity. I really enjoyed the video on Julie. I like how there is not usually a single focal point and how many wild directions are created by the use of lines that it makes you admire the whole entire panting itself.
Reading 3, Rhythm, Repetition
I liked the reading. A part a found interesting was how through the manipulation of rhythm can it generate feelings of tension and or calmness. I also didn’t realize that colors and patterns could also create rhythm. In the video Thiebaud uses repetition in many of his paintings such as the one with soup bowls and it’s repeated use of the oval shapes of the bowls creates unity in the painting.
Spring 10, Reading 4
The ideas of focal points and keeping attention by isolation and control of where the viewer looks in the painting intrigue me. I especially liked the example by Thomas Eatkins, The Agnew Clinic where everyone would stare at what the artist wanted the viewer to see and just in case the viewer’s eyes strayed from the topic, the man on the left would stop that.
More on, the use of contrast in Lino’s Communication Arts is pretty cool. I would probably still enjoy it nonetheless as it’s interesting even outside of its emphasis on the doves, mouth, and eye.
Futher along, how psychology plays a part in holding our attention in works of art is also interesting. Susan Moore’s Vanity is a work that I like because it works in grabbing my attention. The effect is very strong thanks to the eye contact from the model.
Reading 1
The information on figure ground was very interesting. It makes sense that the term figure comes from the human form because they were the main focus of classical painting. It is also interesting to think about the picture frame and how important it is to consider. I am finding this to be more and more true as I continue in my work in 2-D. Seeing all of these thing being pointed out by Zizek made me more aware of figure ground relationships in everyday life.
Reading 2
The most interesting part of the reading for me was the section on repetition. I tend to use this element quite often in my own work. Something I also found interesting that we did not discuss in class was the idea of the grid. Looking at the examples I think it is a design I might want to look more into. The lines in Julie Mehretu’s paintings are chaotic and fast. They have a very beautiful quality to them.
Reading 3
The idea of shapes creating rhythm in a space is very interesting. I usually associate the word rhythm with things like music and not usually art. I like the use of rhythm in architecture and the examples they used to show it, like in Greek columns. Wayne Thiebaud’s use of repetition in his paintings creates a beautiful space that lets the eye move around the painting.
Reading 4
The idea of emphasis by contrast was the most interesting to me. There was a particular picture with a zebra in the middle that caught my eye. The emphasis here is obvious, but in other pictures like the one next to it the focal point is much less obvious. This makes the viewer look at the painting longer.
Cubism, Picasso, and Hockney
Cubism has never appealed to me, and although I believed cubist artists, such as Picasso, to be very talented I did not appreciate the work. Learning about how cubism is supposed to represent multiple viewpoints gave me a greater appreciation for the work. Taking beginning drawing I hated perspective, I can understand how cubist artists see that one/two point perspective is not really how we see the world, and try to show the viewer this through cubism.
Reading 6
Balance in 2-D art is something I think we as the viewer tend to take for granted. Really looking at a painting and see where the fulcrum lies is sometimes a hard task. The idea of unbalanced work making us as viewers uneasy seems true. And the way just a strong color can balance an entire picture is a very cool concept.
Reading 1
This reading really shows the importance of figure ground. The entire aspects of picture plane and the postives and negatives are what defines a figure ground relationship. Zizek on his intake on ‘Children of Men’ explains how he thought the foreground and background of scenes were such important aspects of the movie.
Reading 2
To me, what i found the most interesting was the repetition and continuation section. Concepts like this, yet so simple can make an overall piece of art interesting. The repetitive or unified state of the subjects is a result of a rather pleasant composition.
Reading 3
Visual rhythm is an interesting concept partly because it’s movement is a pleaser to the eye. The Albert Renger image of the trees is a good representation of this. Similar to repetition, as in the same movement, but the subject (trees) are all different.
Reading 4
I found the concept of emphasis very important especially if there is a certain part of your piece that you want to stand out. After reading this it seems as if there needs to be a balance between the focal point and the overall idea of background and foreground. Such as in contrast.
Reading 5
Cubism is such an interesting yet complex idea. Instead of a single point of view cubism represents many points of view. It gives a greater perspective and depth to the eye. The view point portrays an overall interesting state.
Reading 6
The reading shows balance as important in 2-D art. As viewers its a natural tendency for our eyes and mind to see a balanced composition. Although unbalanced work can be a bit uneasy for us viewers. Balance is what makes an overall composition strong.
